Dr. Ira Kirschenbaum: Master Surgeon

Dr. Ira Kirschenbaum is an orthopedic surgeon at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center who specializes joint reconstruction, minimally-invasive in knee and hip replacement surgeries, arthroscopy, and complex revision joint replacement surgery. His interests have led him to help influence not only orthopedics but also medical education.

 

Dr. Kirschenbaum completed his medical education at Albert Einstein School of Medicine in the Bronx after graduating from Brown University, Magna Cum Laude. His completed his residency at Einstein and he also participated in a research fellowship on cartilage and joint aging at the National Institutes of Health. Furthermore, he has studied at the Rothman Institute and Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.

 

Dr. Kirschenbaum is Chairman of Orthopedics at the BronxCare Health System, a position he has held since 2008. Prior to that he was the Chief of Adult Reconstructive Surgery at Kaiser Permanente. He has also been the managing partner in a large multi-specialty medical practice. A founding member of Medscape Orthopaedics, Dr. Ira Kirschenbaum has helped to make medical information more accessible. Medscape is a website that provides medical news articles and information on various topics like oncology, obstetrics, gynecology and emergency medicine, among many others. It also provides continuing medical education for health professionals. Medscape was ultimately sold to WebMD, where Dr. Kirschenbaum was the Community Health Editor.

 

Dr. Kirschenbaum has written various articles on many health and technical topics including outpatient joint replacement, electronic media, information technology, and practice management. Additionally, he is a member of various medical organizations including the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He maintains various patents on surgical instruments and medical information. Moreover, he has developed instruments for knee and hip replacement. In 1994, he was the recipient of the James A. Vohs Award for Quality while working at Kaiser Permanente.
